An IP camera is typically used to keep an eye on your home or office from any web browser over the Internet. In this article, you will be able to learn how to set up a Linksys Internet Camera so that it can be accessed remotely over the Internet. Assuming that the IP camera is already set up and can be viewed by any computer within the same network where the camera is connected. To set up the Linksys Internet Camera to be accessed remotely over the Internet, follow the steps below:
Advanced Configuration with the Web-based Utility Chapter 4 To upgrade the firmware: Other operations: Go to the Linksys website, www.l nksys.com, and Clear While editing a user’s information, click Clear to • download the firmware upgrade file for the Camera. Clear the User Name, Password, and Confirm Password Then extract the file. I have just brought a WVC54GC camera and was checking up on firmware updates. First I looked on the US site and there was an update but on checking the UK - where I live - there was no update for V1.10.
I. Assign a Static IP Address on the Internet Camera
It is necessary to assign a static IP address to the Internet camera in order to have one IP address to associate it with when you try to access it using another computer within your network or from a remote location. Assigning a fixed IP address on your camera will make communicating with it easier. For instructions on how to assign a static IP address on your Linksys Internet Camera, follow the steps below:
NOTE:We used WVC54GCA as an example.
STEP 1: Access the Linksys camera’s web-based setup page. For further instructions, click here.
STEP 2: Once the web-based setup page is open, click the Setup tab.
STEP 3: Under Basic Settings, go to Network Settings, then click the drop-down arrow next to Configuration Type and select Fixed IP Address.
STEP 4: Enter your preferred IP Address. Make sure it is within your network’s IP address range.
NOTE:In this example, we entered “192.168.1.118” as the new IP address of the camera.
STEP 5: Enter your Subnet Mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, and Secondary DNS, and then click Apply.
NOTE:You can get the Subnet Mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, and Secondary DNS from your network administrator or from your router’s Status page.
II. Set Up an Alternate Port for the Internet Camera
Most Internet applications use HTTP port 80 to communicate. In order to avoid HTTP traffic, it is advisable to assign an alternate port for your camera. You can use any port from 1024-65534. To set up an alternate port for your Internet camera, follow the steps below:
NOTE:We used WVC54GCA as an example.
STEP 1: Access the Linksys camera’s web-based setup page. For further instructions, click here.
STEP 2: Once the web-based setup page is open, click Advanced Configuration, then enter your camera’s User Name and Password when prompted. By default, “admin” is the User Name and Passwordunless you changed it when you initially configured your camera. In that case, enter the new User Name and Password.
STEP 3: On the left pane, click Options, then click Alternate Web Access Port.
STEP 4: Click the drop-down arrow next to Alternate Web Access Port and select Enable, and then enter any port number from “1024”-“65534” in the Port Number field.
STEP 5: Click Apply to save the changes.
III. Set Up a DynDNS Account
If you want to access a camera or a computer remotely over the Internet, you can use a domain name. This domain name will be used to communicate with your camera remotely over the Internet. The Linksys WVC54GCA and WVC80N have a 1-year free service from TZO Dynamic DNS. However, you can also use DynDNS.org if you want. To set up TZO Dynamic DNS on your Linksys Internet Camera, click here.
IV. Set Up Port Forwarding on Your Router
NOTE:The instructions in setting up port forwarding may vary depending on the router you are using. However, the concept will be the same. In this example, we will be using a Linksys WRT54G router.
STEP 1: Access your router’s web-based setup page by typing “http://192.168.1.1” in your web browser and entering “admin” in the Password field, leaving the User Name field blank.
NOTE: If you changed the default IP address and password, enter those instead.
STEP 2: When the setup page appears, click the Applications & Gaming tab.
STEP 3: Under Application, enter a name to identify your Internet camera, then under Start and End enter the Alternate Web Access Port you assigned earlier.
NOTE:In this example, we entered “camera” as the Application and “1025” as the Alternate Web Access Port, which we assigned earlier.
STEP 4: Under IP Address, enter the static IP address assigned to your Internet camera, and then check Enable.
NOTE:In this example, we entered “192.168.1.118” for the camera’s static IP address, which we assigned earlier.
STEP 5: Click Save Settings.
